Part-Time Church Custodian
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, self-motivated Church Custodian who is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment for church members, staff, ministry teams, renters, and community guests. The Church Custodian is responsible for routine cleaning, facility upkeep, event support, inventory management, and identifying facility needs throughout the church campus.
Because facility usage varies from week to week, the custodian must be able to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and respond to changing needs while ensuring that high-traffic and heavily used areas remain clean and functional. The custodian's work reflects the church’s commitment to hospitality and stewardship of its facilities.
This is a part-time position averaging approximately 12–15 hours per week. Additional hours may occasionally be required to support special events, seasonal activities, baptisms, memorial services, weddings, rentals, or other church functions.

Essential Responsibilities
Routine Cleaning and Facility Care
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the church and replace liners as needed.
- Monitor high-traffic areas and remove trash promptly to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
- Vacuum carpeted areas throughout the Worship Center, ministry spaces, offices, classrooms, Youth Center, Annex, and other church facilities.
- Clean and sanitize countertops, tables, doors, and other frequently touched surfaces.
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of windows, glass doors, and other glass surfaces.
- Sweep and mop designated hard-surface floors as needed.
- Spot clean carpet stains and spills using approved equipment and cleaning products.
- Maintain cleanliness in designated restrooms not covered by contracted cleaning services or volunteers.
Facility Organization and Room Readiness
- Ensure ministry rooms, meeting spaces, the Worship Center, and common areas are returned to their standard configurations after use.
- Monitor furniture placement and room setups to maintain orderly and functional spaces.
- Check church facilities regularly to ensure rooms are prepared for scheduled ministries, meetings, rentals, and events.
- Assist with setup and teardown of tables, chairs, and other equipment when needed for church activities, rentals, memorial services, or special events.
Event and Ministry Support
- Provide custodial support before and after special events, ministry activities, rentals, weddings, memorial services, and seasonal programs.
- Set up and remove communion tables as scheduled.
- Prepare, monitor, clean, and restore the baptismal when baptisms are scheduled.
- Perform additional cleaning and facility preparation associated with increased building usage.
Inventory and Supply Management
- Monitor custodial and cleaning supply inventory.
- Notify appropriate staff when supplies need replenishment and assist with inventory planning.
- Maintain organization of custodial storage areas and equipment.
- Ensure cleaning equipment remains in safe working conditions and report repair needs.
Minor Maintenance and Facility Observation
- Identify and address minor facility issues when appropriate and within skill level.
- Perform simple repairs such as tightening fixtures, replacing dispensers, adjusting signs, changing light bulbs, or other minor corrective actions.
- Report larger maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or repair needs to church leadership.
- Exercise good judgment and initiative in identifying facility needs and addressing issues promptly.
Professional Conduct
- Interact respectfully and professionally with church staff, volunteers, ministry leaders, renters, and visitors.
- Support a positive and welcoming environment consistent with the church mission and values.
- Follow proper safety procedures and chemical handling practices when using cleaning products and equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, facilities, or maintenance experience preferred.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks based on facility needs.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, reaching, climbing, pushing, pulling, and prolonged standing.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Flexibility to adjust work priorities based on church activities and facility usage.
